What social and psychological effects of being overly dependent on the internet and technology have amongst children and adolescents?
In the past, before the rise of social media, video games and Internet, many children would play outside and have socially sound lives. However, today, many children are being too overly dependent on technology. The topic of being overly dependent on technology interests me because in almost all of the elementary schools that I’ve been too, every child has an iPad. Yes, the iPad can be used for homework and such, but I believe that it is crucial to have a traditional classroom environment. I would observe these students with their eyes glued to their iPad,s not talking to anyone, just fiddling with it. This raises concerns for the future of the younger generation. This dependency and overly use of technology can create problems such as, obesity, socialization, and the most common, bullying. Obesity rates in the United States have been gradually rising since the 2000s and continue to rise mostly between children and young adults. Alongside with the rise of technology, what other physical effects can it have for them? Another problem stated is socialization. Socialization is key, more emphasized on communication skills. The term anti-social comes to mind when people would stay home all day not wanting to be outside with others. If more and more children are to be too dependent on technology and websites, as children grow up continuing this behavior, they will lack the effect communicating skills that are necessary in today’s society. Lastly, one of the most common problems with the Internet and technology is bullying, cyber bullying. With one click or touch of a finger, a post can ruins someone’s day or life. Cyber bullying is the most common type of bullying, mostly because it can be anonymous. It is very important to keep in mind that, whatever goes online, stays online. Cyber bullying is unacceptable and can lead to the deterioration of a child or adolescent’s psychologically growth. One example would be depression. Overall, it is crucial for others to be aware of the effect of being overly dependent on the Internet and technology on the youth and ways to prevent these problems from happening in the future.
